Lip augmentation using injection of dermal fillers into woman's lips.Dermal fillers:  Currently, the most widely accepted means for lip augmentation is with injection of dermal fillers. A number of brands exist to volumize the lips safely and effectively. These are gels made of a substance called hyaluronic acid. This substance exists naturally throughout the body and is very safe when injected by an expert. Restylane®, Juvederm®, Belotero®, and Perlane® are commonly brands used. Current formulations last approximately 1 year. Dr. Panossian is a master injector of dermal fillers for lip augmentation and for wrinkle reduction.

Fat injection: using your own fat, lips can be filled in a more permanent way. Fat is suctioned from the abdomen or thighs and purified prior to injection. A certain percentage of fat may absorb, resulting in less fullness over time and the need to repeat the procedure as necessary for the desired effect. Because this is a more permanent way of performing lip augmentation, an undesirable effect may require a small procedure to contour the lip further and remove areas of excess fat.

Silicone lip implants: These are soft strips of silicone that can be implanted from the corner of your mouth with just a small amount of local anesthesia. They come in various sizes depending upon your anatomy and desired fullness. The effect is permanent, but the implant can be removed if someone no longer wishes to have a certain look.

Radiesse®: This substance is a filler made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres. It works a bit differently than the hyaluronic acid fillers listed above by stimulating greater collagen synthesis. This process results in a longer lasting result and is especially useful for deep laugh lines or to augment cheeks and/or chin. Although Radiesse® may be injected into lips, it is generally avoided due to reported issues of lumpiness.
