Pediatric Plastic Surgery
Pediatric plastic surgery involves the treatment of children who are either born with congenital physical differences or involved in traumatic accidents. Highly specialized pediatric plastic surgeons typically have additional training that goes beyond the standard training of the average plastic surgeon. Their expertise includes specific knowledge of a child’s anatomy, an understanding of the effect of growth, and the rare physical differences that can occur. Children are quite different from adults in both anatomy and physiology. The same treatments cannot always be applied to children as they are in adults.
One of the greatest challenges that children face is the ability to socialize and develop self-esteem as they grow and interact with others. When a child has an obvious physical difference, this can create an obstacle psychologically. Various coping and defense mechanisms must function in order to provide safety and comfort in this setting. This can be quite difficult, especially if the condition is severe and hard to hide. Bullying and social exclusion can result. Pediatric plastic surgery in this setting is vital. Interventions are performed prior to school years in order to ease the child into the social interactions that will shape them for the rest of their lives.
