Many options now exist for permanent facial augmentation. This is done by inserting small silicone implants over the bony prominences that require more volume. Common areas include the chin, cheeks, and lower jaw. These intricately shaped implants are then anchored in the desired location to give you a permanent volume enhancement and restoration of proper facial proportions.
Chin implants are commonly inserted through a small incision underneath the chin or from inside the mouth. The effect is to produce a facial profile that is aesthetically more pleasing. It is often combined with rhinoplasty (or, nose reshaping) for this reason. The effect is dramatic and very pleasing to the eye.
Cheek implants are typically placed through an incision on the inside of the upper lip. Careful consultation is required to avoid disrupting proper facial proportions or creating a wide face.
Recovery for facial implants is relatively straightforward. Patients are to avoid contact sports or aggressive physical activity for at least 4 weeks. Sometimes, a soft diet will be recommended to avoid disrupting the implants as the heal into place. Most patients return to work within 1 week.
The consultation for facial implants is critical to not only determine if you are a candidate for the procedure but to also determine the optimal size and shape of the implant. This requires evaluating the way your teeth come together for a bite (ie, dental occlusion) and for measurements of your facial anatomy.
